Spencer Art Museum Visit

Today in my BDS 102 class we visited the Spencer Museum of Art on campus. We weren't looking at the galleries set up but rather photos in a room that our professor had the staff get out for us to look at the in some way connected with our current project; photo collage.

Right as I walked in I was intrigued by a piece called "12 Drive-Ins." Or at least I'm pretty sure that's what it was called, I'm starting to wish that I would have taken notes on the pieces that I liked haha. Anyways, these images drew me in because I loved how structured and grid like, yet simple it all was. It was all a kind of collage in a very geometric kind of way and I love it.

There was also some stop motion photos that I really liked as well, I think they play well with out project too. A lot of things I am doing, taking photos of my cat at least, deals with catching him in motion some times.

I also liked the collage/montage photos of the city one artist did. Not so much the "City Shell," although it was intriguing, but the other one really worked well with the project and had fun angles that drew in the viewer.

I also loved that Mark Klett was in the photos that we looked at. I've been seeing a lot of his work lately in other classes as well and I love how his idea of recreating photography can work with just about anything. I also just love the images and landscapes that he captured with that project.

Overall I think the visit was kind of worth the time and effort. It sparked some ideas, but it's more things that I think I'll do with later projects or things just on my own than for this project. I did like seeing other photographers though, that was very fun and interesting. You learn something new everyday, and today I learned that Mark Klett will be speaking on campus the day after my birthday for Hallmark and I'm pretty excited. GO PHOTOGRAPHY!!!

Wayfinding Inspiration

For our first project this semester on wayfinding, I looked it up to see what it really was or could be along with seeing the images in class, and I really liked what I saw. There was a lot of big text, bold colors and great design, especially design packages overall, but there was no way my group and I could do anything like that in just a couple of weeks. And even though we couldn't do it all, it doesn't mean I can't dream up how I might use these things for my project or for any kind of wayfinding on campus.

Now I would like to share some of the photos on wayfinding I found, like, and drew inspiration from and say what I would do on KU Campus with these ideas of wayfinding.

This photo I liked and we could actually use in Strong, the building my group chose. It already has some signs similar to this, they are just more horizontal and stick out farther and have a yellow, serifed text on them. I think this text looks much better and the design is very sleek and modern. I think something like this or maybe just a happy medium of the two would look great in Strong Hall.

I liked this photo because I like the layers and color use to show different areas. I think this kind of idea would work well in building with multiple floors, obviously, and we could even incorporate KU colors or just one color with different tones. I had originally used this idea for my group but scratched it later because it was just too much and too modern for the style and feel in Strong Hall.

I liked this photo mainly because I like the sleek, modern look and how contrasty it is. I like the orange popping off the white and grabbing your attention. This could be used in any of the drab, gloomy looking buildings on campus, just to give them some new life. No offence KU, I love you :)

I like the idea of wrapping big text around a corner to grab attention from multiple angles. A group member of mine, Jake, thought of doing this for our group with one of our signs that leads to the stairs. I think this could be really cool and useful in any building on campus. It might even be cool to have it in all of the buildings just for some cohesiveness throughout campus.




So those are just some of the inspirational photos I have saved up on my flash drive. I have some others and I might blog more about those another time. But I definitely want to keep these images around for more inspiration on other projects that might come up.

Dribble

For our latest class project we had a small group and constructed words to represent what they were and be an environment that made sense with the word. My group got the word "dribble." The first thing that came to my mind is, "Hey, we're a basketball school. Let's go with basketball dribble," and my group members thought the same thing.

 So we constructed our word in our school colors of crimson and blue and made the dot of the eye a basketball. We decided to put our letters in front of Phog Allen in front of Allen Fieldhouse, and boy was it glorious. I had a lot of fun taking pictures of our word in the environment and later on one of my group members, Amy, and I decided to take pictures with the word in different areas inside the Fieldhouse. So here are some photos of our dribbling journey.
